John E. Shinn, 86, passed away Saturday morning, December 22, 2018 at his Jacksonville residence.
Mr. Shinn was born December 19, 1932 in Ripley, WV and moved to Jacksonville, FL 55 years ago from Charleston, WV. He was a member of Oceanway Assembly of God where he taught Sunday School and helped take care of the gym for the youth. His past employments include Glidden Chemical Manufacturing where he was a distillation supervisor, Simplex and Hertz Rent-A-Car. He was a veteran of the Korean War and served in the U. S. Navy aboard the USS Gregory.
Mr. Shinn was a very devoted husband and father. He enjoyed all sports and was an expert at sports trivia. When his sons played baseball he always managed to arrange his work schedule so he could attend his sons' games.
He was predeceased by a son, Steven Shinn.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Greynell Shinn (affectionately known as Mamaw); his son, Johnny Shinn (known as Uncle Johnny) and Bea; two brothers, Lloyd Shinn and Richard Shinn; six grandchildren, Brandon, Brad, Trai, Chaise, Kayla and Matt; seven great grandchildren, Raelin, Hailey, Morgan, Logan, Camden, Carter and Cooper; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, December 27, in the Stephens Chapel at Green Pine Funeral Home with Dr. Ken Barney officiating. Interment will follow in Green Pine Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12 noon until the time of service Thursday at the funeral home.
