Wayne Alfred Harrell, affectionately known to family and friends as “Weird,” passed away on July 26 2026 leaving behind a lifetime of laughter, craftsmanship, creativity, and unwavering love for his family.

Born on November 24, 1947, Wayne was a proud native Floridian whose life was as colorful and unforgettable as the stories he loved to tell. For more than five decades, Wayne worked as a pipe fitter and welder and was a proud member of Local Union 234. He was legendary on the job—not only for his skill and work ethic, but for his quick wit and humor that made even the longest workdays pass more quickly. His fellow workers nicknamed him “Weird,” a name he wore with pride, and one that became synonymous with laughter, friendship, and unforgettable storytelling.

Wayne was the son of Sue Lynn Harrell and Palmore Harrell. He grew up alongside four brothers and one sister. In his younger years, he transformed from a clean-cut kid into a long-haired young man whose thick, flowing hair was the envy of many. He generously donated his hair several times to Locks of Love, reflecting the quiet kindness that defined his character.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 28 years, Yvonne Elizabeth Harrell, whom he married at the Charismatic Episcopal Church. Together they shared a love of creativity and faith. Yvonne, now a retired Spanish teacher, is also a metal artist and Master Gardener. Wayne is also survived by his daughters, Amanda Harrell and Charleen Giles and her husband, Stephen; and by his treasured granddaughter, Annabelle, the light of his life, who lovingly called him “Peepa.” He delighted in every moment spent playing with her and treasured the joy she brought into his life. He is also survived by his only remaining sibling, Thomas Harrell and his wife, Anna, along with many extended family members and lifelong friends who were blessed by Wayne’s loyalty, generosity, and kind heart.

Outside of work, Wayne embraced life with enthusiasm. He loved playing sports in his younger years and remained an avid fan throughout his life, rarely missing a game. As a young man, he enjoyed surfing Florida’s waves, and fishing remained a lifelong passion. He also had a deep appreciation for blues music, which was often the soundtrack to his days. Wayne was an accomplished metal artist whose work reflected both his faith and his love of Florida’s natural beauty. He participated in numerous art festivals, including the Fernandina Beach Shrimp Festival, where his work was admired by many. One of his most meaningful accomplishments came when he was commissioned to create more than 1,000 crosses for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes during the Super Bowl hosted in Jacksonville, Florida. Also worked helping to build the space mobile launcher at the Kennedy Space Center. His artwork, featuring Christian, tropical, and coastal themes, can be found in homes and hearts throughout the community. Above all, Wayne will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, craftsman, artist, storyteller, and friend. His laughter was contagious, his generosity was genuine, and his friendships lasted a lifetime. He had a remarkable ability to make people smile, and his legacy lives on in the memories he created, the art he fashioned with his hands, and the love he gave so freely. Wayne lived. Wayne loved. Wayne was loved. And he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him 

Funeral services will be held in the Chapel of Green Pine Funeral Home at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, July 30, with Rev Jackie Hayes officiating.  Interment will follow in Green Pine Cemetery.  Viewing will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service Thursday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, plants or gift cards would be wonderful in order to make a “Wayne Memorial Garden” at the family home.
