Robert Earl Thornton, “Bobby,” 76, of Fernandina Beach, FL, passed away peacefully on August 13, 2025, following a courageous battle against cancer. Born on May 1, 1949, to loving parents J.L. and Mildred Thornton, Bobby graduated from Fernandina Beach High School and was briefly enrolled at St Johns River Community College prior to being drafted into the United States Army. He married Frances Elizabeth Stewart (Beth) and was stationed in Stuttgart, Germany. After completing his years of service, 1969-1971, they returned to Fernandina Beach where Bobby worked as a residential carpenter for over 40 years, building and renovating homes all over the island. Bobby and Beth later divorced and remained friends throughout the ensuing decades to be active and supportive in their children and grandchildren’s lives. Bobby later married Joyce Carvell who was a loving wife and stepmother. Bobby was an avid fisherman who enjoyed time on the beach, in the creeks, and anywhere near the water. Some of his fondest memories were beach days on the south end, spent with his beloved family and dear friends. He enjoyed an oyster roast, fresh caught fish, a cold drink, rooting for the Seminoles and watching Tampa Bay Rays baseball. He is survived by his children; Lena Ramsay (Bobby), Laura Beran (Josh), Layton, five grandchildren (Aidan, Gigi, Mila, Fletcher, Charlie), and older sister, Judy. He is preceded in death by his parents, older brother (Jimmy), and wife (Joyce). Although Bobby is gone, his spirit and love will forever remain an integral part in the lives of all of those who loved him. A funeral service will be held on Saturday August 23 at 11:00AM at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Barnabas Center, Fernandina Beach (Barnabas Center - Community Services for Nassau County FL).
