Richard Michael "Mike" Owsley, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully at his home in Fernandina Beach, FL, on March 2, 2026, at the age of 79, surrounded by loved ones. Born on January 8, 1947, in Charlotte, NC, Mike lived a full and vibrant life, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew him.
Mike was known for his unwavering kindness and generosity, infectious laughter and comic relief, and his love for family. He obtained his pilot’s license, then went on to Culver Military Academy and East Carolina University. He was a managing partner at Owsley & Sons, Inc. He devoted much of his retirement to the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, becoming a Deck Watch Officer on the USCGC Shrike. His love of the outdoors, particularly offshore fishing, kept him young at heart and provided him with joy throughout his life. In his later years, he thoroughly enjoyed listening to and playing Bluegrass music. He mastered multiple instruments, but his favorite was the dobro.
As a father, Mike was a guiding light, nurturing his children and instilling in them the values of grit, resilience, and integrity. He took immense pride in their accomplishments and was always their biggest supporter. He was also a devoted grandfather, often sharing stories, wisdom, and laughter with his grandchildren, creating memories that will be cherished forever.
Mike is survived by his spouse of fifty-five years, Elizabeth Anne Hedgecock Owsley, two sons, David Michael Owsley (Jessica) of Cookeville, TN, and Daniel Joseph Owsley (Amanda) of Fernandina Beach, FL, and seven grandchildren, McKay, Campbelle, Callahan, Davidson, Scarlett, Joseph, and Butler, who will carry on his legacy of love and generosity. Also surviving are Mike’s brother, T. Reed Owsley (Harriet) of Wilmington, NC, and Eugenia Owsley Fowler of Richmond, VA, along with numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father, Richard Powell "RP" Owsley, and his mother, Mary Ellen Michael Owsley.
A celebration of Mike's life will be held on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, at Green Pine Funeral Home & Cemetery, 96281 Green Pine Road, Yulee, FL 32097. The viewing and visitation will start at 2 PM, with the funeral service beginning at 3 PM. Friends and family are encouraged to come wearing Hawaiian or otherwise tacky shirts. Friends will be received after the service at the Owsley residence to share their cherished memories of Mike.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Coast Guard Foundation or a charity/organization of your choice in his honor.
Mike will be deeply missed but fondly remembered for his warmth, humor, and the countless lives he touched.
Rest in peace, Mike. You will forever be in our hearts.
