In Loving Memory of Jean (Brown) Courter
With deep love and heavy hearts, Jean (Brown) Courter, 78, passed away peacefully at her home in Fernandina Beach, FL, on November 24, 2025. Born in Greenville, Maine, on December 13, 1946, Jean was one of six children of Rita and Robert (Cameron) Brown, a family she loved deeply.
In her younger years, Jean was a talented athlete. She thrived as a varsity cheerleader, competed in intramural sports, and ran track as part of the Norwich Free Academy Class of 1965. She later played softball for many seasons in the first women’s league in Norwich on Team Melaena, where she made cherished lifelong memories.
Jean worked for 25 years at Norwich State Hospital as a Mental Health Worker, where her patience, compassion, and kindness touched countless lives.
Jean was a devoted wife, mother, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, friend, and the most loving grandmother. She shared a beautiful 50-year marriage with her husband, Bob Courter, and was the cherished mother of Patricia Courter-Czmyr and her husband, Mark. She was immensely proud of her grandchildren, Zachary and Jenna Korenkiewicz, who brought her endless joy and purpose. She never missed their events, cheering for them from the stands. They were her whole world.
Jean was an avid sports fan, especially of the Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots, and UConn Women’s Basketball. She loved cooking, listening to Elvis Presley, laughing, celebrating holidays, supporting Veterans, boating in New England, and spending time at the beach, where she found both tranquility and joy. Her smile, laughter, and kindness will forever be remembered.
In the years following her retirement, Jean and Bob moved to Fernandina Beach, FL, where they spent the past ten years enjoying the sunshine, the beach, their pool, nature, and making new memories together.
Jean was predeceased by her parents, Robert (Cameron) and Rita Brown, and her brother, Robert Brown Jr.
She is survived by her husband, Bob Courter; her daughter, Patricia Courter-Czmyr (husband Mark); her brothers Guy W. Brown (wife Charlene) and Donald Brown; her sisters Patricia Roberts and Isabella Kinney; and many nieces and nephews.
She is also survived by her grandchildren, Zachary Korenkiewicz (fiancée Lexi Pelletier) and Jenna Korenkiewicz (partner Angel Garcia), along with their father, Jeff Korenkiewicz, who remained close to Jean throughout her life. Additional survivors include brothers and sisters-in-law Helen and Art, Linda and Tim, Rick and Lisa, and Mike.
Jean adored her loyal companion, Woody, and her grand-pups King, Sunny, Lily, and Kali.
She will be remembered for her courage, generosity, humor, and the warmth she brought into every room.
A Celebration of Life will be held on December 14th from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the Amelia Walk Amenity Center, 85287 Majestic Walk Blvd, Fernandina Beach, FL.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her honor to a Veteran organization or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, both causes she supported over the years.
Further services will take place at her final resting place in Norwich, CT, in early 2026.
