James Truett, Sr. Obituary

 

 

James Edgar Truett, Sr. of Callahan passed away Wednesday evening in his home, May 24, 2023 at the age of 100.

Mr. Truett was born December 15, 1922, in Mt. Vernon, GA, the son of John M. Truett and Lillian Edwards Truett, and moved to Callahan 50 years ago from Jacksonville, FL.

He was a devoted member of Thomas Creek Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday School teacher, sang in the choir, and led music for the Wednesday prayer meetings as well as other areas of service for the church. He currently attended New Life Baptist Church in St George with his daughter’s family.

He was a member of the Boilermakers Union Local 199.

Mr. Truett was one of the few remaining World War II Veterans serving with the U. S. Navy as an aviation radar/radioman. He received a commemoration for his participation in the war after his squadron entered Tokyo Bay for the purpose of accepting the surrender of the Imperial Japanese Government and assisting in the subsequent occupation of Japan. They were the first squadron to operate from Tokyo Bay.

In addition to his parents and siblings, he was predeceased by a son, Joseph R. Truett; a great granddaughter, Ashley Lauren Quarles; and a great grandson, Bill Taylor.

Survivors include his devoted wife of 70 years, Lillie “Mae” Truett; a son, James Truett, Jr.; daughter and son in law, Beverly and Ray Scarbrough, Sr; nine grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; and many other friends and loved ones.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, May 27, in the Stephens Chapel at Green Pine Funeral Home. Bro James Conner, Bro Jimmy Durham, Bro Donnie Williams and Bro Dakota Quarles officiating. Interment will follow in Green Pine Cemetery with Military Honors. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until the time of service Saturday at the funeral home.
