Herbert Charles Marshall, Jr. passed away peacefully on March 1, 2025 in Fernandina Beach, Florida at the age of 96.
Although suffering from the ravages of Alzheimer’s Disease for several years, Mr. Marshall retained his kind, compassionate, humble, and sweet disposition through the very end of life.
He was predeceased by his parents Herbert Charles Marshall, Sr and Lucy Fussell Marshall of Rose Hill, NC, a sister Helen C West of Raleigh, NC and brother Julian F. Marshall of Smithfield, NC, his wife of 62 years Marjorie Riley Marshall and his wife of 6 years Ann Roberts Priester Marshall.
He is survived by four sons, Richard Allan and Linda Jordan Marshall of Fernandina Beach, FL Herbert Max and Lucy Larson Marshall of Greenville, SC, Charles Riley and Martha Brannon Marshall of Cary, NC, and Tom Fussell and Kit Browning Marshall of Daphne, AL seven grandchildren, Jordan, Megan, Jennifer, Allan, Libby, Katie & Evan; four great grandchildren Riley, Jackson, Madison & Harper; 11 step-grandchildren; and 13 step-great-grandchildren, as well as step-sons Joe T Priester, Jr and Debby of Franklin, TN, James L Priester and Murray of Birmingham, AL, and one step-daughter Jan Priester Hughes of Gainesville, GA
Mr. Marshall graduated from the NC State University School of Engineering in 1949 and satisfied his Air Force active duty commitment by working for the US Army at the Ballistics Research Center in Aberdeen, MD, the Pacific Proving Ground on the islands of Enewetak Atoll and Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, NM. Mr. Marshall retired from active duty in the Air Force as a Captain in 1956, but remained active in the reserves, retiring as a Major in 1972. Mr. Marshall joined the Reduction R&D group of Reynolds Metals Company at Listerhill, AL in 1956.
Upon his retirement from Reynolds in 1981 he donated considerable time & energy to charity organizations, including Habitat for Humanity where he served as a board member as well as involvement in the construction of numerous homes. He was also active in disaster relief with the American Red Cross. He was a charter member of Edgemont United Methodist Church, and was devoted to his church as well as camping, hiking, hunting and fishing with his sons and others, including Boy Scouts of Troop 298, where he was the founding Scoutmaster. He was an avid world class tinkerer, engineering everything he did his entire adult life.
A memorial service and family visitation will be held at a future date at Edgemont United Methodist Church, Florence. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Edgemont Methodist Church Memorial Fund, or a charity of the donor’s choice in memory of H. C. Marshall, Jr.
