Harmon Leroy "H.L." Clemmons Obituary

 

Funeral Service 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 15, at Citra First United Methodist Church, Citra, FL 

Visitation 12 Noon until the time of service Saturday at the church.

 

Harmon Leroy (H.L.) Clemmons Jr., a resident of Yulee, Florida, passed away on April 5, 2023 at the age of 90.

He leaves behind his wife of 51 years, Mary Fred Clemmons, his sons Kurt Clemmons and Charles (Chuck) Clemmons, Chuck’s wife Sarah Thomas Clemmons, and his grandsons, Noah and Andrew Clemmons.  He is preceded in death by his brothers Ben and Elton Clemmons.

H.L. was born to Harmon Leroy Clemmons Sr. and Grace Smith Clemmons on August 6, 1932 at their home in Citra, Florida.  He is a graduate of Ocala High (1950).  He earned a degree in Citrus Agriculture from Florida Southern College in 1958.  He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956 and played trumpet in the U.S. Army Band.  He was stationed in London during his term of service where he played trumpet in ceremonies for Queen Elizabeth II. 

His career was in the citrus business.  He was a managing partner of citrus groves in Citra, Florida for over 30 years.  He married Mary Fred Schloemer on July 11, 1971.  They lived in Ocala, Florida for over 35 years. They moved to Port Charlotte, Florida and then retired in Yulee, Florida in 2015.

H.L. was active in the community as a member of First United Methodist Church (Ocala), Port Charlotte UMC, and Yulee UMC, singing in the church choirs for many years.  He sang over 60 solos during his time at the churches.  He was deeply committed to the Salvation Army where he managed bell ringing fundraisers at multiple shopping centers every year during the Christmas holidays.  He was also a member of the Ocala Kiwanis Club. 

His family remembers him as a loving father and husband with a strong faith in Christ that led him to the service of others.

H.L.’s favorite charities were The Salvation Army and Yulee United Methodist Church.

A visitation and memorial service will be held on Saturday April 15th, 2023 at the Citra First United Methodist Church in Citra, Florida.  Visitation will begin at noon and the service will begin at 2 p.m. Interment will follow in Citra Cemetery.
