David Edward Pettengill, beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, passed away peacefully on December 8th surrounded by those who loved him. He was 85 years old.
Born on December 7, 1939, David grew up with a deep appreciation for family, hard work and a passion for the joys of life. Throughout his years, he influenced many lives with his generosity, honesty and sense of humor. As retired military who piloted the original F-4 Phantom directly off aircraft carriers, his quiet strength and calm manner carried him through life.
After the military, David built a career as a commercial and private airline pilot. Outside of work, he was an avid golfer, spending many hours on the course and the North Hampton Golf Club with friends. He enjoyed cooking for family and telling stories of his military adventures around the dinner table.
He is survived by Carol Lyn Pettengill [wife], his children, Holly Ann Yang [Charlotte, NC], David Pettengill, Jr. [Salem, VA], and Andrew Pettengill [Lithia, FL], all of whom will carry his love and lessons forward. He was preceded in death by Howard Wakefield Pettengill and Malvina Fiset Pettengill [parents] and his siblings, Jeanne Reinert and Howard Wakefield Pettengill, II.
David Edward Pettengill will be remembered for his kindness, integrity, and love of family. His presence will be deeply missed, but his influence will continue in the lives of those fortunate enough to have known him.
