Coach Larry Phillips, 82, of Fernandina Beach passed away Sunday morning, October 17, 2021.
Coach Phillips was born in Pikeville, KY and moved to Fernandina Beach 42 years ago. His coaching career spanned over 40 years and included positions as: assistant basketball and football coach at Georgetown College, assistant coach at North Royalton, OH under his brother, Bob, assistant coach at Auburn University and head basketball coach and assistant football coach at Pikeville. Other coaching positions included: head basketball coach and assistant football coach at Hilliard High School, assistant football coach at Fernandina Beach High School and physical education coach at Yulee Elementary School. He was also in charge of the lifeguards at Fernandina Beach, Fort Clinch and Talbot Island.
Coach Phillips was inducted in the Georgetown College Hall of Fame for records he holds as a student athlete in basketball and football as well as the Pikeville High School Hall of Fame.
He was predeceased by a sister, Marsha Phillips and a brother, Bob Phillips.
Survivors include his daughter and son in law, Suzy and Carlos Penaherrera of Yulee, FL; his former spouse and friend Marilyn Phillips; a sister and brother in law, Sally and Walker Williamson of Middletown, OH; five grandsons, Lance Majors, Robert Rae (Tiffany), Christopher Penaherrera (Amber Contois), Dylan Penaherrera and Blake Peneherrera, and two great granddaughters, Elaina Rae and Emarie Rae; nephews, Rob Williamson and Bryan Phillips; and a niece, Katrina Blomquist.
Coach was funny, kind and generous. He loved helping people and loved his family and student athletes.
There will be a memorial service at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, November 1, in the Stephens Chapel at Green Pine Funeral Home. The family will receive guests from 2:00 p.m. until the time of service Monday at the funeral home.
