Billy Pogue Obituary

 

 

Billy Carl Pogue passed away on May 18, 2024. Billy was 85 years old.  He was born in Alachua, Florida on September 20, 1938 to parents Monroe and Ruth Bagby Pogue. He was one of 10 children and was preceded in death by his parents and siblings James Monroe Pogue, Johnnie Pogue, William Edward (Lucky) Pogue, Edna Sullivan, Frances Carlisle, and Geneva Thornton.

Billy joined the US Navy in 1955 and served in Korea through 1957 when he was honorably discharged following service to his country. Upon exit from the military he joined A&P Grocery where he rose to the position of regional manager supervising 35 stores. Later he opened and operated his own grocery in Williston, Florida. He sought a job change and became a talented pipefitter welder and taught welding at a votech school in Inverness, Florida.  He joined UA Local 234 in Jacksonville and worked a number of years at Anheuser Busch in maintenance supervision.

Billy is survived by his best friend and wife of over 32 years Danny Wright, whom he continued to tell of his love for her to the end. Billy dearly loved and was very proud of his two sons Billy Carl Pogue, Jr (Lisa) and James Monroe Pogue (Tonya). He was also survived by his sisters Betty Hollifield, Louise Farrell (Jack) and Mary Arnette. He has four grandchildren, six great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Billy was a Freemason and member of Amelia Lodge #47. He was also a member of the York Rite #49 and the Fernandina Beach Shrine Club.

He was a member of American Legion Post 54 for over 30 years where he held a number of positions multiple times and served on the building committee. He was a motorcycle rider and one of the organizers of Chapter 54 American Legion Riders. He served as Chaplin many years. He was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 4351.
He loved to watch football, especially the Gators. He was an avid golfer and in recent years enjoyed RV camping, making trips to see the country, travel into Canada and enjoy the mountains.

In leu of flowers donations may be made to the American Legion, VFW, Shriners Hospitals For Children or Fernandina Church of God of Prophecy where he loved the pastor.


The Memorial Service will be held at Fernandina Beach Church of God of Prophecy, 2712 S. 14th St., on Saturday June 1, 2024 with visitation from 1pm to 2pm and the service at 2pm with Pastor Kay Osban officiating.
